Our thoughts affect our singing mechanics. This is about cause and effect.
Thoughts lead to feelings. Feelings are chemicals. Chemicals affect the brain. The brain affects the nervous system. The nervous system affects muscles, fascia, posture and alignment, which affect Singing Mechanics.
As we criticize ourselves, we shrink and lose core strength, which we feel, affecting our confidence even more, dissempowering our ability to express with ease, power and joy.
1.
Doubt kills high notes. A singer doubting themselves creates weakness in their deep core, which leads to poor alignment, which creates weak posture and support, which manifests in a self-fulfilling prophecy of increased register issues and disappointing high notes.
2.
Fear kills legato. An anxious singer will hyper-engage their sixpack, breathe costally, collapsing their rib cage onto their diaphragm and support system. Therefore they cannot breathe or sustain or find spin.
Just two examples…
So much about creativity and expression is based on trusting ourselves enough to simply “do the thing”, as opposed to “do the thing right”. This is the only way to drop into character, text, and flow. If we want magic, trust-in-self is where it starts. As Nike famously states: “Just Do It.”
